Nigeria's Vet Access Is Growing — Here's Why a Vet Visit Should Come First

Nigeria's veterinary infrastructure is quietly catching up with its growing appetite for pets. Disrupt Africa recently reported on Vet Konect, a Nigerian startup using mobile apps and AI to connect pet owners with veterinary services, and Lagos has launched the country's first dedicated veterinary call centre, giving residents a direct line to animal health advice. Neither development is glamorous, but both point at the same gap: as more households bring a dog or cat home, more of them need a straightforward way to reach a vet once they do.

That gap matters most in the days right after a match, whatever route it happened through — a friend's litter, a listing shared in a WhatsApp group, a breeder found through a site like PetMatch. A photo and a message tell you very little about an animal's actual health. Age, vaccination history, and general condition are things a vet confirms in person, not things a listing can promise.

That's also where PetMatch's own limits are worth being upfront about. It's a free directory, not a marketplace or a vet service — listings are self-reported by the people who post them, and nobody at PetMatch is independently verifying vaccination records or health claims before a listing goes up. The verification that actually matters happens after two people meet, not before, and increasingly it can happen with real veterinary support behind it, from a mobile consult to an in-person checkup at a local clinic.

So treat the first vet visit as part of the match, not an optional extra. Ask to see whatever health or vaccination records already exist before meeting, bring the animal in for its own checkup soon after, and use services like Vet Konect or a local clinic to confirm what a listing alone can't. It's a small habit, but it's the difference between hoping a new pet is healthy and actually knowing.
